Summary: A well worn mixtape, a stolen convertible, a duffel bag full of cash, a fully loaded .45, and super-powers. Seventeen and on the run is the only way to see America right. Teenage outcast Duncan and popular girl Madison share a secret - they can do things other people can't. But their abilities take them down a dangerous path. After a deadly accident they are left with no choice: leave home and never come back. We Can Never Go Home is a new chance to fall in love with the doomed misfits who need to run away to find themselves.
Review: "High school crushes, mix tapes, stolen cars, handguns, strange abilities, dead drug dealers, stolen money, and the highways and back roads of America."
Every once in a while the perfect mix of story and art come together to make something new and different. The first issue of "We Can Never Go Home" from Black Mask Studios sets the stage for a different kind of road trip story and a different kind of comic.
"Two teenagers on the run with a stolen car, a duffel bag full of cash, superpowers, and a .45. This isn't the best time to find out they don't really know each other."
It's not often when a new book comes along and knows right from the first page what it wants to be and the kind of story it wants to tell. The book, written by Matthew Rosenberg and Patrick Kindlon, knows exactly what it's doing and where it wants to take its readers. Rosenberg and Kindlon have achieved a near perfect balance of drama, humor, action, mystery, and suspense making the story flow effortlessly from beginning until the end leaving the reader wanting only to know; "What's next?"
The entire crew of "We Can Never Go Home" has come together and created something special. The artwork by Josh Hood is clean, solid, and polished. It does a great job in clearly telling the story, setting the stage and pulling the reader in to the action and drama of two very different teenagers, attending the same school, but living vastly different lives.
The colors by Amanda Scurti are a perfect match for Hood's clean art style and help to strengthen the mood and atmosphere of the book. Rounding out the team are Jim Campbell (lettering) and and Dylan Todd (design). Both Campbell and Todd bring their talents to bear, adding to the overall high quality look and feel of the book.
Road trip/buddy adventure, crime story, mystery, conspiracy, super hero tale? "We Can Never Go Home" is a near-perfect blend of all of these genres and more. "We Can Never Go Home" is definitely a book I would recommend it to anyone. Personally, I'm looking forward to the next issue and curious to see if they can maintain the momentum of the first issue. The bar is high on this one and the trip has only just begun.
Editor's Note: If this sounds like it would be your cup of tea, then why not head on over to the Black Mask Studios website and see how you can go about acquiring your very own copy when it comes out on the 25th!
