Summary: HAPPYMAN, a hero from the future, has been sent back to the present day in an attempt to prevent an evil that has ravaged the earth in his time from ever taking hold in ours.
In this debut issue, Hap arrives in the MECHACITY and is quickly greeted by his dim-witted EMBASSY contact and fellow “hero”, VOLTAGE. But what begins as a relaxed night filled with booze and new friends quickly becomes disturbing and more than a little uncomfortable when an old foe seeks out the bar-hopping heroes to settle a score!
Review: Now if one particular word in the above credits didn't offend you, then we're already off to a great start. You also might think this is about some Private Detective with a douche baggy name, but once you start to read this funny little title you will quickly see that's way off the mark. As I quickly found out myself. One thing you'll start to notice right off the bat after you read the pretty hilarious foreword/warning is how cartoony the art is. Which I don't think any other kind of art style would fit this. And The Dick does a fantastic job. Wonder what his version of the Powerpuff Girls would be like. Hopefully less rounded pointy toes and Professors with out square chins. When I was looking at the funny looking cover again just now. I was suddenly reminded of The Tick. I don't know why, but I did. And considering how goofy that cartoon was at times from what I vaguely remember it probably fits. Kris' writing ability is absolutely fantastic all through out the book, and it really shows how much he likes comedy considering you'll be laughing a bit as well at times from start to finish. Like with the foreword/warning I mentioned. And if folks like Happyman are who we have to depend on to keep the Big Bad in this universe from taking over like he or she already has in the future. I think everyone is pretty much doomed.
But at least the ride to getting to the Doom will be a hilarious one. Perhaps a little disturbing too. Like for example, wondering just what short shorts have to do with a special ability. I don't think that's something I'd even want to think on. As I'm liable to need some therapy if I really think on it. The fact Happyman and the rest of his fellow heroes have a place to go to is fairly awesome. But you know would be a prime target for the Big Bad if he or she ever found out about it. Unless some random drunken hero burns the place down accidentally. The big fight we get in this story is also rather hilarious. And I admit that I thought 'The Knob Goblin' was actually a female. Especially considering the way ol' Knob was acting. Its easy to see why one might at first think that way. Especially with the Knob's interesting mode of transportation. Now I do hope you go into this story with your mind open to what might happen. As with Knob and what happens during the fight, you'll need it. Otherwise you won't be able to enjoy the story as much if you're prone to being easily offended or some such. I'm rather thankful Knob's mode of transportation as well as the character isn't running loose in our world. I think a few butts might be rather violated after the Knob's through.
Something to have a big shudder about. Ugh. And one drunken hero certainly does owe Voltage a lot for literally saving his butt. Now the Knob might be a knock off possibly of the Green Goblin or even the Hob Goblin. But the character is actually a lot more hilarious and potentially only really dangerous to a certain body part. And wouldn't mind seeing more of. And has me wondering just how eccentric like other villains are. I'm rather curious on how Voltage later got a hold of those marshmellows. Although something tells me he's got all kinds of things on him that folks like our main hero Happyman will find themselves wondering about. We get a great ending for this issue that will have you wanting to laugh. Unless you're the type that doesn't like to laugh for whatever reason and just smile instead. That too works. But I think a little laugh might get out from you anyway. Anything is possible, or so I've heard. Another lesson that Voltage should learn is not to show up at a fellow hero's place after having been shown taking credit for something on tv. But then again, that alcohol makes you do funny things. We also get a very curious little epilogue that will have you being plenty curious. Especially since its so short. Not to mention a pretty foul epilogue at that. You also get an extra fun little bit of reading after that as well. But I won't ruin that for you good folks! But you will be wanting more of that too!
So if you're looking to find yourself an enjoyable title that will ensure some laughs. Private Dick #1 is definitely the one to pick up!
