Summary: From writer Sam Miserendino and artist Colin Blanton comes new take on the ressurection: Jesus is back and he is not happy.
Review: Never have I ever experienced suspense, a serious amount of anger, and the urge to vomit at different points in the span of minutes while reading one comic book. And Prince of Pieces has certainly managed to accomplish that. Those that have likely already read this know full well what I'm talking about too. Creator's Edge is known for doing some pretty crazy stuff, but good Lord does this take the freaking cake here. Colin knows how to create some real creepy and outright disgusting characters that all fit perfectly in this book. People you know right off the bat you can't trust at all. His colors help a lot in that too. This book takes a crack at pervy preachers, preachers that are seemingly in it for the money, the saps who buy into it, and horny teenagers. And it does that crack really well too, even while Jesus is out and about doing horrible things to people. Sam seriously must have reached into some deep part of him that was screwed up with equally screwed up views on Christianity to deliver the story we see here.
Granted, considering how some are with the whole Christianity thing, I can clearly see what led him to diving into that part of himself and going as far as he did. Jesus himself has arrived and this somewhat sadistic (say what!?) version of the savior is not happy at all about a whole lot of things. Course, since so called Christians are twisting the words of the Lord to fit their own horrible views, I can't blame him for being sadistic in how he brings on his punishments. Views that quite a few actually tend to have in the real world too. I imagine there are preachers out there in the real world who scam people for money too, although whether or not they believe Jesus is a hippie and that only the rich man should be in Heaven is another story.
Heck that scam artist preacher by the name of Robert Patterson sounds like an outright nut job who was probably a general before 'seeing the light' and got kicked out for over doing it in the army. This book probably has one of the most hardcore and disgusting deaths I've ever seen happen. And it all involves bubble gum, something I'm sure Roddy Piper would probably never want to have in his mouth again. I don't want to spoil it for you guys, so I won't. But I hope you have strong stomachs. Jesus being the cause of paid advertisements is something I found to be somewhat funny. I mean heck, it makes sense he would be the cause of it to signal his coming back!
After all, what greater way would there be then to plague Mankind with commercials and infomercials? One issue I have though, did Jimmy actually cut off his hand ala Evil Dead after Jesus did his thing on him? Cause if he did, what he does afterwards with a nail gun wouldn't even be all that possible. Something tells me he would get reviled for years to come once folks found out what he did. Frances (one of those saps of this story) will probably kick him out of her life. Jimmy's handling of the situation is nearly straight out the bible, but more modern. Though I imagine our dreaded savior would find a way to come back and angrier then ever. Something I think Sam may have left as a possible thing in a future story.
Something that'll be interesting to see, and especially see how Jimmy handles it if he's around for it. But after reading this, it brings up the question if a comic can truly go too far past the line. Whether or not this has done this is up to those that read this. Now I found this to be a good story and would add it to my collection, but I'm still struggling with whether or not this crosses a line that shouldn't be crossed. I do admit it would make for a fantastic horror film and probably would fit right in with Tales From The Crypt. So if you think you can handle a very deadly Jesus who isn't happy. Check this out!
