Summary: Danica is mucking up the system. With the help of Mary Magdalene, among others, she is out to make a name for herself in the millenia old poker tournament between Heaven and Hell. Heaven versus Hell, good versus evil... Is that all there is? It's time for a change and the Devil's own granddaughter has gone into business in the Las Vegas desert buying souls for ten thousand dollars.
But now, events foretold thousands of years ago seem to be falling into place and with the opening of an ancient scroll, and the sounding of an angel's trumpet, the End of Days has begun...
Review: Now I am going to be straight up front with some honesty, when I bought this one of the things I was honestly expecting to see was boundaries here and there being pushed and then going and smashing a few of those boundaries into dust. Course in some respects that actually did happen. Now one of those boundaries I was honestly expecting to see being pushed and maybe even broken would have been loads of full on nudity considering this story is set in Vegas and contains Angels and Demons. But Tom Hutchison, the creator of this fine book only went as far as showing a little nudity here and there and leaving it at that. Was I disappointed by that? No actually, I was not. Granted I think someone who likes to see full on nudity in their comics would be however. Now if you're a heavily Religious type, maybe the Christian variety, a few Christian related boundaries that Tom willingly went and smashed like he was the Hulk, you are very unlikely to be very happy about. Maybe it would make you so mad you want to start up a Witch Hunt and go after people that don't deserve your scorn or just go and say rude things about Tom and BDI because he just had to go and blaspheme the Good Lord's ways.
Personally for me though, I freaking loved what Tom did in this book. He did such a damn good job with this storyline that the few grammar errors that were in this were just something I could easily ignore. From start to finish he has so much going on in this volume that you aren't really sure of what could happen next. Someone you see once could unexpectedly pop up again at a later time, only to wind up thinking 'Wow, what a way to go bro!' for example. Potential lesson to be learned there about Luck in the City of Sin folks!
One of the stars of this fine book who goes by the name of Danica is not only one heck of a beautiful woman, she's also one heck of a smart business woman. Plus being the granddaughter of Lucifer himself is a nice touch as well. Although at first I was thinking she was his daughter instead of granddaughter, but Tom did a nice little twist right there. Setting up a casino known as Eternity in the City of Sin and offering 10,000 bucks to gamble or what have you and all just for your very own soul is one heck of a business plan. That being one of those things that would make a Religious type all angry about. I like the relationship she has with Mary Magdelene, now I'm not entirely sure just how super friendly they are. But a few moments alludes to something more then just simple friendship, plus the fact Danica is able to leave Eternity in her hands when some issues erupt at one point cause of what I think was careful planning by Jesus himself is another testament to what these two girls have between one another. The fact Danica herself is a Redhead appeals to my inner Redhead loving self.
The art and colors for Volume 1 are something I find fantastic, even the women you tend to see in this title in skimpy outfits and the like are drawn tastefully. Tom I feel, truly got the right team for this book. And as I may have mentioned in the past, stories involving Heaven and Hell are something I tend to like. Especially when they are pretty darn creative, much like how Penny For Your Soul is. Like I mentioned previously in this review, Tom has quite a bit going on in this book that makes you wonder just what will happen next. He does a superb job in keeping the narrative flow going that instead of leaving you with you scratching your head in confusion, actually may have you going 'holy crap!' due to something you really weren't expecting to see happen. Heck only thing that might have made this even more wild would have been an appearance by Oprah Winfrey! Wonder what Danica and Mary or Maggie as the lovely Danica tends to call her would have done with that particular event?
And while many are having a darn good time and potentially losing their souls, bad things are also a foot. Whether or not Jesus himself is to blame in the first place for the mess that happens near the end of the book is up for anyone's consideration. Though to me I think his Radio show having self needs a good ego knock down. As for Damien, Danica's father, I have to wonder if she'll come to regret a decision she makes around the end. For those of you that have read this already, you may understand what I mean. And if you haven't read this yet, then I highly suggest you go do so! It'll only cost you a few bucks instead of your very soul, I promise! Now one of (to me at least) the most surprising moments is with one of those characters you really wouldn't think much of in the grand scheme of things becoming something of a bad ass. A bad ass named Bunny. Now if a girl named Buffy could be bad ass, then why not a girl named Bunny!? I can honestly say I am looking forward to seeing how her progress goes in becoming a full on bad ass with a wicked looking sword. War just may seriously have some thinking to do when it comes to retirement! Heck I honestly wish I had read this when it first came out, but life's a mysterious little thing and I'm glad for the chance to be able to read this now.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go see a website about an order. And you should do the same!
