Horsemen #1

Letters/Logo: Cary Kelley

Summary: There is a game of chess being played for dominion over the multiverse. On the side of freedom are the Horsemen, an elite fighting force of intergalactic guardians. Their nemesis, Fate and Destiny, look to extinguish all freewill and remake everything in their colorless image. They have battled for the souls of sentient beings across space and time longer than recorded history. Fate and Destiny have multitudes of plans, each more devious than the next, but they are all connected to their ultimate scheme - complete domination of all existence!
Review: Now when you think Horsemen, you may wind up first thinking of the 4 Biblical Horsemen sent to go about causing all kinds of chaos and the like during the end times. Or their sent to do something else like in Darksiders for example. And with this, my line of thought was something along the lines of the Horsemen coming about to do some end of the world type stuff. The cover in my view helps sell that line of thinking too. But boy was I wrong on my thinking for this book when I got done reading it as well seeing the summary for it. Now that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it, I did actually end up enjoying it and found it pretty interesting and would love to read more. Frankel and Jones have brought a different take to the Horsemen and have made Fate and Destiny to be real douche bags. Why Creation doesn't take either one to task is beyond me. Since you think she would be wanting to protect Free Will and all that. But then again I imagine she may be bound by certain restrictions that prevent her from acting. Got to love that sort of thing!
While I found the art from Manchey to be fairly decent, I wasn't entirely sold on it. As at times in the book it seems fairly inconsistent, especially in faces. Something I hope won't be a continuing factor in future issues of Horsemen. Cardoso's colors I didn't really have a problem with and I do hope his colors stay on for this as well. And boy, it sure seems like messing about with Fate and Destiny's work can make for a real big boom! One of the things I'm looking forward to seeing happen, is how far the new Death will go as things happen. The fact that anyone can take on the role of the Horsemen is a neat touch, but I am assuming its only certain people that can be in the role. Which would make sense with something like that. If you have yet to read this, I would recommend you to give it a try! But I will mention that if you are the type who is offended by the fact Biblical material is being used in a comic, this may not be for you.
