Ghoul Squad #1

Letters: Chris Johnson
Reviewer: Rob Wrecks
Summary: In this first issue, the Ghoul Squad matches wits with a werewolf.
Review: This book at first glance from the cover would probably give you a cartoony vibe, and even on the inside it does that as well. Which I'm not saying is a bad thing at all as I like when a comic's art and colors give off a cartoony vibe. Heck I'd watch this if it was a cartoon! Great job to the creative team for pulling it off if that's what they were going for as well. Even the storyline itself feels like its coming from a cartoon as you got a group of monsters (aside from the lovely Wicca) who are out to do good and not be seen as bad guys just cause of who they are. Although only Mr. Varney is about the only one pushing for this since the whole thing is his idea. Whether or not it will succeed remains to be seen!
Anytime Varney was speaking in this, I could just hear what the voice would sound like in my head. That of the same voice the actor used for Professor Utonium from The Powerpuff Girls. Although this guy could use a lesson in manners in how to treat people, especially when it comes to Ratfink. I can just see his treatment of the guy coming back to bite Varney in the butt in a big way!

Out of the characters in the group Varney's put together, I really like the look and the name for Grinderstein. Who is basically the group's muscle with some slight goofyness to the mix. I'm curious to see how long it'd take him and Hellbat to get really angry about something and something tells me Varney would be the cause of it! Wicca's lack of enthusiasm and somewhat pessimistic nature is also pretty appealing as well!
Now for me at least, I think the one problem this book has is the amount of dialogue in it. It just feels like there is too much talking going on and not enough action happening. Its possible I've gotten used to action being a big factor however so that may be at play in this for me.
I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next in this book, especially if there's a longer fight between the group and the werewolf who's actions are being blamed on the Squad by the people of Transylvania. Which is so not cool people! I do believe this is perfect reading material for when October hits as well so do be sure to have a copy ready when the 1st arrives!
