Summary: The ancient demons known as the Hungry Ones have taken over the North, and not even the female berserker Mara, masquerading as the Ghost Wolf, can stop them! But, but if the original Spirit of Flight could be summoned once more?
Review: As you might recall the time when I pretty much gushed like a school girl over the first issue of this series. I'm pretty much gushing again over this series, as its been a truly fantastic read. And with this being the 4th issue, I'm honestly saddened by that as it means its the end of the series. Though I do believe issue 2 is quite damn possibly the absolute best of the bunch. But that's just me and my view on things and I'm just a simple reviewer after all. I love how Ghost Wolf is pretty much like a mantle that is passed on from one person to the next when the spirit is needed times of great peril. El is doing a truly fantastic job in showing true progression and not back tracking at all. Something Marvel and DC could take notes from. And while the lovely Mara isn't the legit Ghost Wolf, she truly does embody the ideals of the spirit. Even going so far as to wear a fallen wolf's pelt as a way to honor the poor fella after what an unpleasant nasty old horror did to him in #3.
This story serves as a reminder as to why you should never let greed consume you. As you might just wind up being the unknowing pawn in releasing things that should never again be released. El even nicely gives us readers a little backstory into what set things in motion for the witch (who rather seems to enjoy nudity) to be on the path she winds up on. Granted, you want to feel sorry for what happened to her when she was a young girl. But still, that's no excuse to use greed to warp people and bring about nasty fellas who want to kill!
The art by Angel and the colors by both Esther and Sandra manage to keep the dynamically beautiful consistency that's been seen since the first book to the very last panel of this one. El truly did get a great team to be part of this title. And if they are part of the possible come back El has thought about doing recently (Yay for Twitter), that'd be seriously awesome. I love how around the end of this there comes a possible way for the creation of one of the Earth's most well known wonders it has. And the reason for it even existed is a fantastic idea that not only protects the outside world, but honors those who fell in the wake of the nasty old horrors attacks. Another even that happens in this story is something I liked a lot. As it seems Mara may not have been entirely alone during her time as The Ghost Wolf. And that is one story I would love to see El do one day.
With something like Ghost Wolf, I'm very curious to see how the story would go on from this point. Whether or not it would even survive to modern times and beyond them. How those who take on the mantle by embracing the spirit would be viewed by those in modern times. I imagine it'd make for some great reading material as there's so many possibilities that could happen with this idea. So if you're looking for something different, something that re-defines being thankful to the stories of the past, check out El Torres' Ghost Wolf. You certainly won't regret it!
