Summary: At the height of the Cold War, the Soviet Union – determined to win the Space Race at any cost – green lit a dangerously advanced mission. They sent a man farther into the cosmos than anyone has gone before or since. Lost in the stars, he encountered something unknown. Something that…changed him.
Long thought lost and erased from the history books, he has suddenly returned, crash-landing in the Australian Outback. The few that have been able to reach him believe him to be a deity – one who turned the scorched desert into a lush oasis. They say he can bend matter, space, and even time to his will. Earth is about to meet a new god. And he’s a communist.
How long can it be before the first confrontation between mankind and DIVINITY begins?
Review: First off thank you Mr. Kindt for this, because I love that this doesn’t take place in the United States of America. We have this whole world with all kinds of people and its really nice to see other countries as the focus. Even better is that we meet Abram Adams, a Russian man of colour who is the country's greatest hope for this project. He’s unusually smart, in pique physical condition, and without a family he’s the perfect candidate for multi-year mission in space.
Welcome to the abbreviated life story of Abram Adams, who was left on the doorstep of the Russian Foreign Minister of 1945. Groomed by the Government because of his mind and body. Plus being alone he’s trained and then chosen to go into space on a prolonged mission, well before the Americans are supposed to hit the moon.
We see him as a boy grow into a man and all the while he has visions of things and honestly the way his mind works, this mission is the fulfilment of his lifelong dream. Even if that means leaving behind a woman. The writing here really is exceptional as you see him go through his life and training to get to where he needs to be. Though honestly I’m hoping that we get to learn more about the battery of experimental vitamin and drug regimens he took that were designed to keep his body in peak condition.
Also the science behind the suit would be nice as well, don’t leave me hanging man! It’s what makes this that much more interesting aside from divine intervention, which I’d like still see be explained if that’s what is happening. Because suddenly we leave 1945 after he left on the mission and we head to Australia, today where we meet David Camp.
David’s an avid rock climber who does this to clear his head and get his day started while his buddies are still asleep in camp. He’s a handsome rugged outdoors type of guy but with Dreadlocks, which always strike me as silly looking on a white guy. His destiny it seems is to meet up with Abram. David’s story is much more condensed than Abram’s but that’s okay. What we read in the narration and see in the artwork is more than enough to give you a sense of how strong David is even if he doesn’t know it.
So the ending of this issue is where the really weird and interesting stuff happens that makes you wonder what happened to Abram out in space and how he came to be what he is. A nice hook if I say so myself, and by waiting till the end of the issue to reveal what does well, suffice it to say after reading it there’s no doubt you’ll be back for more.
Trevor, Ryan, and David do an absolutely marvelous job on the interiors. While I may question some fashion sense that shouldn't have been in 1945 I can let that slide considering how good the visuals truly are. Plus the suit and the now section and the place that Abram and David meet, well let’s say that the vision behind that is gorgeous.
Valiant really needs to keep making books like this going on in a monthly basis instead of mini-series after mini-series. They’ve got some of the best in business working for them and honestly it’s books like this that can really excite a reader.
