Deep Space Tragedy #1
Cosmic Times
Story, Art, and Lettering: Mike Wagganer
Colors: Moisely Fernandez
Reviewer: Rob Wrecks
Summary: The most epic intergalactic rock n' roll adventure of all time begins here! Deep Space Tragedy - a teenage robot rock band on the run - gets more than they bargained for on a remote planet. What was supposed to be just another show soon turns into a struggle of life and death with the fate of an entire planet in the balance.
Review: Wow, its been awhile since I got to read anything by Cosmic Times so this is a special treat for me! Big thanks to Martin Pierro for having allowed me an opportunity to check out and review this fine start to what will hopefully be enjoyed by a lot of comic fans. Especially if you're a comic fan who has a great love for robots too! Now you might be wondering if this is about robots facing a tragedy deep in space, but you would be incorrect on that. As the robots (three of them in particular) are in a band called Deep Space Tragedy and rock like no other robot before them has! These three bots are on the run, from what is unclear but despite that, they aren't letting it get them down!
One of the first things I noticed right off the bat (aside from the awesome art and colors) is the dialogue that's seen through out this book. Its all really fitting for a race of robots as well so kudos to Mike for that. ReBoot and Transformers also come to mind when having fitting dialogue for certain kinds of characters and I'm not even gonna go into what Disney did with Xenon a few years back as well… Yeah, It wasn't good.
I'm not entirely sure if this universe of Mike's is filled with other races or if its all just robots, but that's okay with me. And I'm certainly interested in seeing where he goes with the history of his universe too.
DST are on a remote planet where independent thought isn't all that liked judging from the way of things. Which actually reminds me a little of the Satanic Hell title, only not as extremely wild as that. Although the bots aren't gonna have just an ordinary time of things either, especially if Jerrik's (band singer) dreams are anything to go by! I get the feeling Riggot and Dom are gonna be preferring to stay home a whole lot after this little adventure ends!
What I'm curious about however, is what this golden object is that winds up in Riggot's possession, and how it connects with the vision/dream that Jerrik keeps having. Not to mention what some other group's interest in the item is as they just don't seem like real pleasant fellas. At least from what I've seen of them so far.
The interactions seen in this book are a clear testament to how long Mike has put his time on it. Everything feels natural and in no way forced and its just really great. I'm not entirely sure anyone else's colors would go as well as Moisely's do with Mike's art here. It helps add to that slight cartoony feel that's present here.
I am excited to see what happens next here and I implore each of you to go out and do some pre-ordering for this comic and its future issues. As it will help not only Cosmic Times, but comic shops as well in letting them know there is interest in the story. Now.. LET'S ROCK!
