Summary: Bayani, a boy of 11, is desperately trying to care for his sick father (a fisherman) and keep food on the table for his small family. Unfortunately, the sun has been shining down on the islands for the last month and night refuses to fall. The land is growing parched from the constant heat and the fish are moving further and further away from shore. During this disaster, the rain god, Pati', recruits Bayani to undertake a quest rescuing the nine kidnapped daughters of Lady Moon from the horrible monsters of lore. Bayani embarks on a great adventure with his friend, Tala, and using their wits, the kids defeat one hideous creature after another in their quest to rescue each of the Moon's daughters.
Review: I do believe I wound up becoming hooked by the final page of this book! Sure, this might be more suited for kids, but its equally suitable for everyone. Including those types who like their comics grim and gritty instead of not grim and gritty. Bayani is a youngster living on what looks to be an island with the rest of his people. Which sounds all kinds of awesome except for one little problem. Its been sunny all day and night for just about 30 days now and that's no bueno! This wouldn't be so bad if there was some rain to help out, but that too is missing. So suckyness all around for Bayani and company! And since Bayani's dad can't do much, our main young fella has to do it himself! With some interesting results that don't produce any food, but does send him on a journey.
Don't ya just love when a simple thing turns into so much more!? I know I do! Just think how less boring it'd be if you went for a milk run only to wind up doing something way more epic along the way! The quest he goes on? Well it involves helping end the constant amount of sunnyness and lack of rain. So yay for that! Naturally such tasks aren't all that easy and while Bayani's a young fella, I have no doubt he's gonna succeed! Of course you can't go on an awesome journey by yourself, thus enters Tala. Who seems to be a bit of a know it all who thinks she's in charge and that kind of annoys me. But at least she's willing to help out even if she does seem a little skeptical and possibly paranoid.
I love how the title of this issue plays into certain events in this issue, and from what I recall Travis saying on Twitter some weeks ago, each issue's title will relate to what's going on in the book. At least if I remember rightly anyway. I am really loving Grant Perkins' work here as he covers both art and color duties. Which as this is more for kid friendly reading, the art and the colors all feel very cartoony right as you start off with the front page. I like it and its perfect for this title and I hope Grant will be around for the entire run of the series, however long that may be.
As for the lettering, while Taylor did a nice job on it. I do feel he could have gone an extra mile and made certain character's dialogue less like everyone else's. As the blue and gray speech bubbles while a nice indicator, need a bit more than that.
Which I think will be 10 issues (this being the first of the possible 10) all aroud, but I could be wrong. As Bayani and Tala will have to journey around the island they live on to rescue the daughters of the Lady Moon. Why anybody would take someone's daughters is beyond me as its seriously not cool! And I am eager to see where Travis takes this as we go about learning just who would do such a dastardly deed. Again, I'm hooked on this title and I think after you read it you will be too.
