The Little Mermaid #1 (of 5)

Writer: Meredith Finch
Artist: Miguel Mendonca
Reviewer: Derrick Crow
Summary: Do you know the real story of the Little Mermaid? When a young mermaid finds herself captured, her world will turn upside down and she will need to find the courage to confront her fears or perish at the hands of evil.
Review: In this issue we get the continuation of Zenescope's take on the original Little Mermaid tale. With hints of the original, and a dash of Disney thrown in, what we get this issue isn't bad at all. It's mostly set-up of course, but what we get is still a pretty solid read.
Speaking bluntly at first, if I were to categorize a sin for this issue the biggest one would be that again it's mostly set up. With the real story yet to come. The second sin of this comic would be that it already expects you to know your stuff by now regarding Zenescope's take on this story. But it at least has a little blurb about at what point this tale takes place, but at the same time, we didn't get a lot of info regarding who anyone was. You jump in, and you sink or swim depending on how fast you can pick things up.
Thankfully, things are pretty easy to pick up. Although at some point I was expecting some character to be named Ariel, instead this time we get Erica. That's sweet.
Again, this comic is mostly set-up so there's not an awful lot that actually happens except we do get to see the dark side to Erica's powers as a mermaid, and we get to see the Sea Witch (this universe's Ursula, because I'll admit I'm most well versed in the Disney adventures than I am the original Little Mermaid story). And she is a rat bastard, but I really like that.
I'm incredibly curious to see where the story goes in the coming months, and if it'll have a bigger effect on the Grimm universe or stay a stand-alone. I could do either or, really.
I also like that the story is going to heavily involve Erica's mom, who I think is Ms. Fisher (she plays a big part in the issue and we never learn her name) but I'm not 100% on that. I probably should mention that names don't play a huge part in this issue. You kind of just gotta guess who's who, or you'll be left out in the cold. Again it's pretty easy to figure out for the most part, that's why I'm not so up in arms about it this time.
The art by Miguel Mendonca is absolutely stunning. It's always hard to review an artist when you can only have good things to say about them, and he's one of those. Wow. He's even able to make the dark side of Erica gorgeous to look at in a creepy, sadistic way. Go check out what this man has to offer, and I know I'm looking forward to seeing more of it in Little Mermaid.
Final Score: 4 Sea Sirens out of 5
