The Intrinsic (Vol. 1 #150)
Arcana Comics
Written by Sean Patrick O’ Reilly, Erik Hendrix, Casey Jones
Pencils: Allan Otero
Colors: Chandran Ponnusamy
Letters: Erik Hendrix, Amanda Hendrix
Reviewer: Jesse Brown
Summary: Nightmares upon us. The battle of the century is taking place and it looks like the heroes have fallen and doom is at the front door. Thankfully it really was all a dream, but more than that, it was a vision…from the future.
“Philosopher” Ishmael Stone is reminded by this that he still must collect the chosen few that have the ability to stand against evil or else see the collapse of humanity. He identifies the remaining chosen one as a young woman from modern day earth and recruits her to the cause, while revealing her power.
The rest of the good guys show up just in the nick of time to save the others from an assault by demons sent through a portal. Together they retreat, and share knowledge about the guy responsible for all this, and that he is motivated to find his queen, to which he will literally unleash hell to get her back.
They eventually travel through a portal to face the enemy head on.
Review: Remember when you were a kid and you got together with a bunch of friends from the neighborhood? Maybe all of you would gather at the playground or in the woods, and pretend to be super heroes. You would take turns shouting out what your character could do, and then change it once you heard the others, making it bigger or better. Then once you all settled someone would decide that you were fighting to save the world, no the universe, except who were you saving it from? Bad guys of course, but what kind? Some kid chimes in that he thinks the bad guys should be zombies, another says Nooo vampires, another settles everything by saying they are zombie vampires from another dimension that look like skeletons. That’s what this is; imagination time at it’s best.
The “Intrinsic” are a group of special people with super powers gathered together to save the universe from the brink of destruction. How? by defeating the bad guys of course. How do we know they are the bad guys? Because they have skull faces. Try not to ask too many questions, because this is your typical comic book fodder. Just plain fun, so enjoy the ride.
In this dynamic group of action adventurers we have a whole kitten caboodle of strange types. Yes Sir the gangs all here. We have the Super huge, super strong guy, complete with bulging muscles and gothic tattoos; by contrast a teeny tiny flying fairy girl, a gothic medieval sword wielding warrior, and the all knowing all powerful elemental wizard who doubles as the leader of the group, among others, this makes up the stars of this story.
It is a very straightforward approach to a comic, but I believe it pays off nicely. The action is intense, bold, and very well presented. The stakes are about as high as they could possibly be. I rather enjoy this round up of characters being tossed into a do or die situation where time is of the essence and every last second counts. Never mind so much that the plot is so basic that a child could write it, the action propels the interest and the art work tremendously adds to the appeal.
The pencils by Allan Otero look so striking and well defined that they practically leap off the pages. As for the colors, they too spark and highlight interest and creativity, while beautifully decorating each panel. If you enjoy your comics loaded with a variety of color without loosing a sense of tone, then this will more than please.
So gear up, find your best friends, and get ready to go an adventure the likes of which your inner child has been dying for, while still getting that certain amount of bloodlust an brutality that probably brought you to pick this in the first place.
7 out of 10 Stars
