Silicon Heart #1
Writer and Letterer: Sam Roads
Art: Kat Nicholson
Reviewer: Rob Wrecks
Summary: A graphic novel about love and prejudice, Silicon Heart is set thirty years from now, in the Welsh Valleys.
January is a bullied teenager who finds solace in the embrace of Synthetic Being Rho. Her friends and family are unready to accept this, but when January takes a stand against the prejudice of the law, no-one is prepared for what happens next...
Review: I can tell ya now that I wish I had read this sooner when I first got it as I honestly found this to be a fantastic start to this title. Though parts of this is a bit saddening cause of how our fair gal January gets treated by people, not to mention how Rho himself gets treated. I imagine this will be a story that will resonate with quite a few people, especially for those who were around during the times when the whites and the blacks being together was considered something of a no no. And if these two happen to go beyond friendship, I can easily see problems coming their way. Granted, they alreaady have problems as it is and they've barely even started their friendship! January's supposed 'friends' need some serious slaps to the faces though. And if you've already read this issue by now, you will know what I'm talking about. What Rho says at one point to those girls is a huge plus one of respect to him!
Though maybe he should repeat it several more times until they wind up in tears themselves and get a reality check? Wait, would that make me kind of mean for even wanting to see that happen? Eh, I'll figure that out later. I like that Kat has made January look like an ordinary girl you might see in your own neighborhood and not as some mega hottie who just isn't all that liked for whatever reason. Sam's writing on this was well done from start to finish and he really gets you feeling for our two leading pals. Rho's kind doesn't seem well liked, at least in this part of the world that Sam and Kat have created. And I wonder if that's down to bad apples in the past or just those in January's community being closed minded?
All in good time to find out the answer to that question I suppose! And I like that at the end of this we get blog post entries from these two. As I honestly felt it gives great insight to their line of thought. Especially Rho as he struggles on whether or not he is or isn't whole. One of the struggles being with his own beliefs in the Hindu religion makes him seem pretty darn human and soul filled to me! As who doesn't have that sort of issue from time to time? I look forward to seeing more of Rho's thoughts, along with January's as the blog entries helps you get to know these two even more. Though less of Chloe for me please.
Sam and Kat have started this off just right and I can't wait to see what they do next. As in my view, miss January and mister Rho are the new star crossed kids on the block as they head into what is likely uncharted territory for civil rights in this world that Sam and Kat have created here.
