Summary: After being captured, Nicholas Morgan faces a potentially deadly interrogation at the hands of the Ascendancy. Meanwhile, on a dangerous Venus-like Earth, Agent Nick Morgan makes his way to the hidden fortress of the dissident Futurists, lead by none other than Alpha One’s version of Dr. Carl Sagan.
Review: With each issue that I read of this series, the complexity of it just seems to pop to the forefront. We see Obama and his staff talking about their options: fight or surrender to the Ascendancy. Now that Beta 76, our Earth, has been a focal point for the Ascendancy and with Nicholas and Tobias having been here. It’s time for them to take our Earth into their fold.
The two Obamas meet and one is smoking again. He gave up his Earth to the Ascendancy and is urging our Obama to do the same. I kind of want to see more of how they pressure, bully (oh and I like the bully part because we’re used to the United States being the bully), and put the squeeze on them to see how exactly they are handling it.
When we left agent Nick he was being taken care of by his computer A.I. that’s attached to him. After turning on him and now trying to help him shut him down I was a little perplexed by the whole thing as I would have rather seen Nick himself come to the conclusion of shutting it down without the computer's help. But okay. perhaps he isn’t as smart as I’d like him to be.
I do so like and am enjoying that the Ascendancy thinks that Nicholas is Nick and only Major MacKenzie Cartwright knows the real truth. What she does to him? Well let’s hope it isn’t permanent because I’ve come to like him a lot. Meanwhile Nick is able to get back to the Native tribe with the impressive metal pyramids and get back to his car and keep on going without Nicholas. Whom he realizes has been captured.
Oh my, both boys and both grandfathers have finally met only they don't meet their biological ones. This is excellent writing and I have to admit that by using real people, who in their fields are incredibly smart and talented was a very smart move to better flesh out this title. And the leader, I want to spoil that so badly, but I will resist the temptation to do so. The only thing better would’ve been if Neil DeGrasse was a part of this conglomerative.
It amazes me that in a story that concentrates on Parallel worlds which seems so incredibly fantastic that there is real science behind it all. We don’t see many weapons and such that aren’t plausibly able to be created and used. This really goes to being able to blend science and fiction into a usable, reliable, and not to mention entertaining story. They do an excellent job with it here and it’s impressive, and the characters and characterization is the creme of the crop. Good, bad, and the ugly they are all displayed perfectly as people that you know.
The interior artwork by Christopher and Zac is just damn good. This is classic comic book illustration at it’s finest. And its proof that the art doesn’t need to be overworked or made too realistic to have that wonderful impact needed to visually tell a story.
