Summary: Some would say Johnny August is a man blessed with amazing abilities. He can heal the sick and wounded, he can fly, and he can fight… but Johnny see’s his powers more of a curse than anything else. For five years he has been on the run. Chased by a Corrupt Corporate Mogul who would use Johnny’s power for his own & a Military Tyrant eager to weaponize his abilities for his own purpose.
Review: For awhile now both Paul and Benjamin have been spreading the word of One-Man mostly through a few images here and there. Helping folks like myself get more and more interested in what they were doing. And if it failed to get your attention, something shiny must have been in your face because One-Man will definitely draw one's eyeballs to its art. You may recall a time when I covered a review on another Warrior Innkeeper title, and the art from that is also represented here. Sure it may not be to your liking because its not the normal way of things. But that's what makes it unique in its own right. So be sure to open this comic's pages with an open mind. Now when I started reading this, and the beginning has some unfortunate outer space residents, I thought for a short period of time that One-Man was a part of their race in some way. Only to be proven somewhat wrong sometime later. Which I say kudos to Paul for that. And I know I sure as heck wouldn't want to have the luck of those space type residents!
Also another thing to keep in mind aside from the art, is that this is not for children. Sure the art may have an element of cuteness to it but still this isn't something you want the young ones to read. Unless you're open minded then never mind what I said! Issue 1 doesn't just throw you into the action and the like leaving you to wonder what the heck is going on. It takes its time to set up things and allowing for a little bit of backstory. Plus its also nice to see that One-Man isn't exactly aiming to be all that super with his powers. But at least its seemed to have helped him out with a habit of his. Now due to the nature of his ability, I can see how some might see this as some sort of a Religious thing. Myself, I don't see it like that and hopefully others won't let that stop them from reading this. Now I'm a little curious though why the cop we see here seems to have issues with One-Man. Something I hope that both Paul and Benjamin expands on as we go forward with the comic. Although I think I may have an idea of one of those reasons. I know one thing though, that Razor Blade guy looks like one nasty character! And its mostly down to the BDSM looking suit he has on that has me thinking that.
Now I did notice a few grammer mistakes here and there, but I don't think its serious enough to really take you out of the story. Unless you're nuts on proper wording or some such. Then you might have a bad time. Now why I get why some things are spelled the way they are. But things like commas need to be considered more in where you place them. Plus there's only a certain amount of coloring we see in this book mixed in with the black and white look. Which I think melds perfectly together. And I'm not sure, but at one point Ron White makes an appearance in this comic. Now I could be wrong but that's who this guy reminded me of. Another element in this also had me reminded of the T.V. Show First Wave. For those of you who may remember that show and when you see the element I mention, you may just wind up thinking that too. The little foreword at the end is a nice touch since it gives readers a nice look into seeing how the journey for this comic was like as well. Now... Let's get this cliffhanger out of here because I want to see what happens next!
