Review: Not So Super? No. Not so much.
I don’t like reading, much less writing, negative reviews so I am going to try and focus on what is positive about this title.
I can’t blame the art by Joe Hunter. His work is the kind you see published by art house book publishers and the style is eye-catching. Certainly outside the mainstream and for readers like me that’s a plus.
The story centers on Dani, an I.T. tech working at Techyon Corp. for six years. Dani used to love his job and this first introductory issue attempts to make us care that this everyman tale is setting up a parody on the superhero origin story. But it fails.
Its only success is making me not care; I don’t care that Dani is an I.T. guy disenchanted with his job. I don’t like I. T. guys. They have a superiority complex. So right out the gate I don’t care; I don’t care that Dani may or may not have a future with Hina, although both are obviously into each other; I don’t care that Dani goes to sleep with an upset stomach and then is late for work the next day; I don’t care that Dani discovers he has X-ray vision at a board meeting; I don’t care that it’s too be continued!
This might be a little OFFICE but it’s also a little I DON’T CARE.
Now for the creators (and to those reading this in general) let me be a little encouraging, because I know what it’s like to put your heart and soul into something and receive a bad review: this is not all bad. There’s genuine comedy and entertainment here (which is why I made the above OFFICE comparison) but it’s the type I am not into. For readers into THE OFFICE, PARKS AND RECREATIONS, and a whole slew of recent NBC comedies and their like this is a title they will enjoy.
There was a web series not too many years ago called GOD, INC. that had a faithful following strong enough to attract the Sy-Fy Network to buy the series. Disappointingly, it was never developed but it demonstrates that there is always an audience for originality. I do believe NOT SO SUPER is original and I do hope that despite it not appealing to me, the creators continue their endeavor to publish and grow their audience. But as I have learned from my experiences with “JOSEPH!”, not all original works are appreciated by everyone. I am open to the second issue changing my mind.
--PS
Several critics have enjoyed this title, including Susie Cumberland (wordofthenerdonline.com), Dustin Cabeal (comicbastards.com), and Dan Tresomi (darkjeedai.blogspot.com).
