Summary: For over 10,000 years the zodiacal energies have been available to those whose consciousness is open to the reception and manipulation of them. That access has been achieved only by a select few --- twelve, to be exact. One human vessel for each of the houses of the celestial wheel. This is the saga of The New Zodiax!
Review: Now ordinarily I'd be sleeping in during the day and avoiding the nice sunny outside atmosphere that's likely somewhat cold. But instead, I am here writing out this review for the first issue of the brand new and awesome title called New Zodiax. Because I slept most of last night and doing this is a lot more fun then more sleeping. Though some of you may think I have my priorities a bit mis-matched, but oh well! Now when I started reading this, a couple of things came to mind when exposing my eye balls to what Joe is doing here. It mainly reminded me of namely the Hackers film with Angelina Jolie and the real life hacker group Anonymous. Only those two things seem to be way more successful then what some of the hackers in this comic are. Which is not a dig at the group in this book. Since there's only so much one can account for and surprises do indeed spring up like an RKO from out of nowhere. Which that would likely be less painful then what a few of these characters seem to go through later in this book.
Now to my knowledge, I've never read anything from Astronaut Ink before. And this being my introduction to the publisher is a seriously nice way to go about it in my view. Reading it from start to finish I didn't really want to even stop til I finished. Kudos to Joe for managing to write a darn good story here that can keep one's eyeballs practically glued to it til he or she is done. And immediately wanting more after the final page. While this comic's central theme is about the idea of the Zodiac, we don't really see much of that here in this first issue. Though I imagine once we get to the second issue we will see more of it come into play. And with how this first issue ended, I am seriously hoping some kind of intervention happens for the Liberaider! Course it was a nice touch as a sort of running gag to see people keep asking who he is. Made for a nice little bit of amusement for me.
Joe also nicely handles the art here alongside the writing. Everyone seen through out the title has their own individual looks to them with no shortcuts done at any point. And while Liberaider is a fairly awesome guy in the online world alongside his little Virus friend who I took a liking too on account of his smart aleckyness. His personal life however is a definite work in progress. Although his apparent mastering of the word 'M-hm' is a nice touch too. I can easily see how that would annoy the people he's saying it around. Especially if they are particularly jerky towards him. Particular a certain teacher of his, sheesh that guy must have been jealous! And boy, this Dinosaur group that's around in Joe's universe really just don't seem like a good bunch. Especially since they seem to have some weirdo who likes to be on camera while he's handling their business.
I think Joe has got himself a good one with this title, and I strongly believe others will come to enjoy reading this as much as I have. And with a cliffhanger ending like we have here, I am truly hoping to see Liberaider get some good ol' payback! As for the Zodiac theme that's in mind for this story, I can see how the concept would wind up being involved with folks like Liberaider and others to try and bring down the Dinosaur group. Of course its pure speculation on my side of things. But either way, I am looking forward to seeing what Joe does next here! I highly recommend this book, so get to checking it out as soon as you can!
