Mr. Yang Fights Aliens #1
Story, Art, and Lettering: Mickey Lam
Reviewer: Robert McClelland
Summary: By day, Mr Yang is one of those deadpan, dry but hilariously blunt, strict teachers we all had when we were young. At night, whilst trying to balance marking with his social life and sleep he is rudely awakened by aliens kidnapping a homeless person in his local Peckham neighbourhood. After bothering to get out of bed and have a look through the window to investigate, what he discovers threatens the survival of the human species and nature itself.
Review: For those of you who love theirselves a title that's all black and white. Mr. Yang Fights Aliens will be of interest for you. One of the first things I noticed right off the bat when I started reading this was the art. Something that makes itself known right on the very cover itself. I admit that the art for me doesn't have much appeal, and I kind of think some coloration would have been a benefit for it. I'm not sure if Mickey Lam was going for a certain look for the title, or was under some sort of a constraint that kept him from going further. Got to admit though that Mickey did a great job in making his aliens in this title look down right butt ugly!
Though aside from a potential clue an alien gives around the end, I am fairly curious on why he and his fellows are essentially dissecting humans. Couldn't they have gone for cows or something!? Or gone for the type of folk who aren't exactly the greatest example of Humanity? Would have been doing a big favor! Unless their reasons for dissecting folks is for a very bad reason, then well.. Never mind!
One of the main things I liked about this is a line that Mr. Yang happens to say later on to someone that I assume is a security guard about how Class is how one treats another. If there was an award for 'Best Response in a Comic', I'd definitely vote for that. Now in the summary it mentions that our man Yang is partially described as strict. I however am not really seeing that about him at all. I see him more as a mouthy Emo scene looking guy who enjoys some meditation who can kick butt. Granted, this is only the first issue so maybe on down the line we'll see some of that strictness show up.
I'm also curious if Mickey happens to be a Star Wars fan since there's a certain piece of tech in this title that shows up that reminds me of something from the films. And with the lettering work Mickey does, in some cases it may be a little hard to read. But at the same time it helps to give the impression that the aliens actually do sound alien like.
I'm wondering if Mickey is potentially setting up some sort of a trap for Mr. Yang with the lovely lady who happens to help him and the others he saves from the ship. But if it is a trap, at least its one heck of a way to go out for him! I find myself looking forward to see what happens next, and if you have yet to read this. Why not give it a go? You could just find yourself a fan!
