Midnight Warriors #12

Writer and Creator: Mark McCracken

Artist: Edgard Aedo

Summary: This issue kicks off our Midnight Warriors manga-style epic “Time & Time Again”. That’s right, this is the FIRST Chapter of a multi-part storyline that will be entirely drawn with anime-influenced artwork, and whether or not you have read any previous issues of the series proper, we have made this saga New-Reader Friendly! A perfect Jumping-On Point for an introduction to the “Midnight Warriors” cast, and in later chapters, even more of the Divine Authority Universe! Matt & Karisma have had feelings for one another since Day One, and now they’re finally going on their First Date! Too bad dinner’s about to be interrupted by the creep called Krudd, and he’s brought along a newfound ally who will rock the Midnight Warriors’ world! Plus, Ray & Selena go on a date of their own, which is really just trekking around on Ray’s new bike and taking out some Vampire Thugs! Demmy plays his first Video Game, with some help from Nightside! And a strange visitor arrives from a place far, far away… which is not outer space… think about the title of this storyline… got it?
Review: I honestly wanted to kick myself for not having read this title sooner. Because once I started reading it earlier I couldn't put it down and kept going til I got to the last page. Normally, I don't like to read a title that's already some issues in since I'd feel out of place by not knowing what's going on. But with this, I didn't really feel that way. As in a sense, this is essentially a jumping on point for new readers like myself as its a new story arc. Plus the Previously area Mark was kind enough to put in for folks like myself really gives a good detailing of previous events. Which was enough to make me curious.
Later mentions of previous events as I read this comic made that curiousity grow a bit more. I loved the humor that was in this, and if there's more of that in this title or the others from DAC, then sign me up! For those of you that enjoy black and white over color, this title will also appeal to you. As a matter of fact, only the cover itself is colored. And a nicely done cover too by Tina Olah if I might say so myself! And since when did women hate being treated to dinner at a nice fancy restaurant!? Though I do love that Karisma is taking a bit of advantage during the date. Poor Matthew!
But love will make you do just about anything for that special person, so for him, its likely worth the high bill he'll get for this date! And at least that high bill won't include damages to the area unlike in a bar with a few of their friends. Which I love how Mark worked in a fairly nice reference to Buffy: The Vampire Slayer and Angel. Makes me wonder if he was a fan of those two shows or is familiar enough with them to make good use of the whole Soul aspect from those two shows. Another aspect that Mark works wonders with, is how he goes in on showing the way certain characters speak with his lettering work. Like the character of Krudd. Who's not exactly all that smart it seems.
And while the lack of color works out well in some parts of this book, it doesn't exactly benefit the character of Demmy. Who's lack of pupils in his eyes makes it seem like he's missing eyeballs entirely and there's just skin there instead. Though I think if he's not careful, Eric is likely to have his way with him. Which I think Erik's possibly using his lack of knowledge in some areas to his own advantage. Now I could be wrong with what I'm thinking in that area. Though Demmy's one trivial interest aside from his studies being comics is one of the things I found amusing while reading this.
As I mentioned earlier, the art in some cases isn't exactly great as faces seemed to not be bothered with at certain times. But as I recently learned during my writing of this, Edgard's possible need for better resources is most likely the main issue with parts of the art in this comic. The use of smaller paper makes for a certain style that Edgard has come to use. And while his approach with his particular style of manga art may not appeal to all, its not something you should necessarily let yourself get distracted by as you have an enjoyable reading experience with Midnight Warriors #12.
I have to admit, that around the end, it took me a few times to realize why there was smoke coming out of Matthew's leg after a new arrival showed up during a fight Matthew was having with some bad guy. As it wasn't coming out of Matthew's leg but from the new arrival's ring. I was honestly confused with that for a bit, but I'm glad I managed to figure out what was up. I am curious about this guy's arrival, along with whatever plans the current bad guy seems to have. I can only imagine how ugly things may get. But if Krudd shows up again, at least the level of ugly will be slightly manageable, right? Hopefully so!
