Summary: The Apocalypse falls on the last town in creation, and the Horseman, Famine, is its harbinger. In Last Ride for Horsemen, Famine arrives in the form of a monstrous Plowman and sets forth to reap devastation by the edge of his plowshare and by the hoof of his Hellish workhorse! He is challenged only by a small cadre of townsfolk - an arrogant tycoon, a socialite mayor, a hardened sheriff, and a grizzled hired gun. Can they bring themselves to harness a force potentially more deadly than the Plowman to have a mere chance to repel him?
Review: Now who doesn't love stories in comic books with Biblical figures? Crazy folk that's who! And Last Ride For Horsemen is certainly one of those kinds of stories. And as the title suggests, its all about one of the members of the Four Horsemen. At least that's the general thinking I have anyway. And I guess if you're having to wait a long time for the End Times to get here, a hobby would be something you'd need to have. And it seems Famine has done such a thing, if you can call dressing up like a farmer and running around in fields with your horse a hobby anyway. And as you read this, likely one of the most disturbing things you'll find in this book is Famine's horse eating off a man's face. Now that's one horse I never want to be near! I don't think I could actually stomach seeing that happen in a movie with a similar scene or if this got adapted for a movie.
I like that this is set in the Old West and not a more modern or futuristic time. As it helps show that the End Times can certainly come whenever they darn well feel like it. While I didn't find what the bugs did particularly disturbing, others may find it that way. As Nathan's art and Gavin's colors certainly don't hold anything back. Which their work is certainly great from start to finish, and never leaves you confused about who is who.
Though you would think the former mayor's wife would be a bit more mis-treated due to her skin color due to the time period this story is set in. But its a nice thing on Kevin's part for not including any kind of unpleasant name calling. While this felt somewhat short to me and a little fast paced, Kevin does a nice job on the writing duties. And may just leave you with a few questions once you've finished this title. Like how this version of Famine came to be for example. And why exactly the bugs were created. Though I honestly felt it was too easy with how he was handled. I am curious if he'll somehow be back in future stories or if this is all that is planned for him. Whether or not that is the case, I'm ready to see what comes next. So if you're interested in a little Biblical happenings, Last Ride For Horsemen #1 may just be what you are in need of!
