Review: Well its certainly been awhile since I came across a comic that had elements of Steampunk to it. And as such was a fairly nice change of pace too! And I have to admit, as this was my first time experiencing the world of Lady Mechanika, I really enjoyed it. As to be honest, I honestly thought this was a brand new title in the world of comics until I got to talking about this book with a friend at work. Big yay for deciding to talk to him! And when I have the chance, I am definitely going to be tracking down the material that came before this current storyline. And after reading up on some of her history, I find myself curious if whether or not her unique eye coloration (Similar to the X-Man known as Gambit) wound up that way due to the horrific conditions she suffered before becoming a private detective. While I was reading these two issues, I hadn't even realized her limbs are mechanical until I got to doing a bit of research.
I have to wonder though if rain would affect her mechanized limbs? And do her red on black eyes have special properties? Or just simply a part of her that happened? These are answers I definitely look forward to finding out in the future! And if I'm rightly assuming, The Tablet of Destinies story takes place after previous events in the journey of Lady Mechanika. Which is always nice cause it helps in world building as she searches for links to her missing past. Though I have to admit, were I in her shoes, I would have laid down the smackdown on a rich pair of siblings after being so damned crass about killing a creature who would have preferred being left alone and what they plan to do with its body. That was about the only thing I didn't like in these two issues. Perhap however we'll see karma come into play where those two are concerned. Like an angry mate coming in search of revenge for example.
History also has often taught us that when you go in search of lost wonders of the world, there's always someone somewhere looking to screw you over in order to gain the secrets of said lost wonders of the world. Something I'm sure the good professor we meet in this story will soon learn well enough about should he (hopefully) survives the whole ordeal. Though I doubt he'll let that stop him, but he'll likely be better prepared for the next possible happening! I must admit that Joe, despite his being American, captures the British and even German feel of things quite perfectly. Likely a lot of research went into that as well! Naturally, it takes the good professor's grand daughter to get Lady Mechanika involved. And boy does she!

Little Winifred seems to have some pretty big glasses on her little face too. Which makes me wonder if that's just how glasses really were back then or if she's perhaps a special case. This young lady certainly seems to have some spunk to her too! Which will hopefully serve her well while she's an un-willing guest of a few friends. Leading Mechanika to a bunch of nuts in robes who don't wanna share enlightenment with the ladies. What, are you fellas worried they'll do it better then you when it comes to knowledge and enlightenment!?
I have to wonder though if the Professor's assistant really is an innocent in the whole mess they are in. Or if he's doing a damn good acting job in order to keep the Professor in the dark. Either way, I look forward to finding that out! Especially where this Kralle lady is concerned as well, as this chick just screams bad vibes! Joe is crafting a wonderful story here that will have you questioning the motives of different characters until the very end. So if you're looking for an awesome read with a great female lead, secret societies, professors in peril in the lands of Africa, lost cities, and Alchemy. Lady Mechanika: The Tablet of Destinies will be for you! As issue 2 is out now in stores and on ComiXology!
