HOW DO I FIND CONVENTIONS… THE CLIFF NOTES EDITION
Hey folks! This article is dedicated to vendors, creators, hardcore cosplayers, and diehard fans of the various convention scenes. Now I do roughly between 35 and 50 shows a year on average since 2011. So a lot of people in my circles tend to ask me where I go to get my information on upcoming conventions.
There are several sources I tap into and I thought I would take the time to list some of my “old reliables” starting with:
-THE SWAG TABLE AT CONVENTIONS: This is usually a table that a lot of cons and events set up so vendors, creators, and other convention owners can lay out flyers, postcards, and other paper ads letting for people to pick up and find out about various wares and services out there. This to me is like picking up the local paper and checking out the want ads.
-OTHER DEALERS AND CREATORS AT CONS: This is the WORD OF MOUTH source I go to. It’s usually very helpful in the idea that you can not only get the where and when of a con or show. But in many cases a review of the pros and cons of the event.
-SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES: Sometimes I scan a tidbit on my Facebook or Twitter scroll that peeks my interest.
-INTERNET CONVENTION DIRECTORY SITES: There are quite a few sites out there that have info and links to conventions and shows both near and far.
Here are a list of some of my favorites:
CONVENTION SCENE: Probably the most popular comic convention listing site- http://www.conventionscene.com/
UPCOMING CONS: Gives you a decent overlay of all sorts of different categories of conventions- http://www.upcomingcons.com/
COMIC BOOK CONVENTION.COM: Pretty sparse and flimsy. But has a few tidbits here and there. http://comicbookconvention.com/
ANIME CONVENTIONS.COM: Fairly good source for anime shows across the globe. http://animecons.com/events/
GOBLINHAUS: Pretty good place to check out horror conventions- www.goblinhaus.com/conventions
GOOGLE: For when those sites fail you. Or you are looking for something like a craft or Christmas craft fair in your area. www.google.com
That is my basic con and show finding set of tools. Hopefully it makes your job a little bit easier! If you have questions or comments, feel free to ask! Take care!
