Summary: "They asked for angels, they prayed for saviors, what they received...were Guardians."
Review: Now normally in real bad situations you pray to some higher or maybe even lower being for some sort of help. And normally the prayer goes un-answered for whatever reason and you are completely screwed. Or you get incredibly lucky to have such good fortune once everything is said and done. With Todd Black's Guardians, folks start praying and for a nice change of pace someone actually answers back. Now isn't that nice of the fella!? You have to wonder though if there'll be some sort of price to pay with him or if the Creator doesn't want any sort of payment in return. And as I read this, it seems that so far there's been nothing like that. Though Evil seems to be responding in kind, which makes sense in its own little warped way. One of the things I liked about the two main characters of this story, is that despite the Maker sending them to Earth to help save the day, they weren't entirely all that bad ass. As even to the end of this title, they were still adjusting to everything around them and pretty much finding their own identities.
I really think Todd did a good job in showing that just cause you were created by the Maker himself, you aren't all that perfect still. Granted, they were likely incredibly lucky that their lack of communication skills at the time didn't cause any sort of issues. Now I did find that the weather scientists were just a little too helpful later on. Guess maybe I've seen too many instances where the scientists weren't exactly helpful at first. So whether or not real helpful scientists is a nice change of pace can be left up to those who read this title. But for me, it was my only real complaint about this story. Lee's art certainly has its own (to me at least) unique look. And I'm looking forward to seeing on how his art will grow even more as time goes on with this. Alex Garcia's colors certainly did a nice job in bringing the art to life as well. As I mentioned earlier, the two main characters known as Element and Chaos certainly wound up finding their own respective identities.
Although you'd think with Chaos he'd be the more out there type to go explore and mingle and for Element to be a bit more reserved. Another nice touch on Todd's part there. Though for some strange reason whenever I saw Chaos, I kept feeling reminded of Hiddleston's Loki from the Marvel movies. Not sure if that was intentional or if I'm simply just imagining it. As for the villain, who I am going to call Mr. Wind. This guy was certainly no pushover and was a great way to bring in as a challenge for our two heroes. Even with his first appearance, the guy looks pretty darn creepy. Not exactly someone I'd want to be in an alley alone with! And considering how much of a challenge he was before he was brought down, I'm rather curious to see who Todd will have Element and Chaos face off with next. Plus, I'm honestly hoping to see Mr. Wind himself again as it seems like Todd could bring him around again if he wanted. Someone like that who's got control over winds is a real serious opponent if written right and Todd wrote him out well. The road to Hope and Peace for Delta City certainly seems like its going to be a long one in coming, but its something I look forward to seeing happen! And hopefully Todd and the creative team for this will have the opportunity to do as many stories as possible to expand what's been started here.
Editor's Note: Currently, Guardians is running a Kickstarter with 9 days to go to make their 3,000 dollar goal. Which is currently at 1,010 dollars, but with your help the project will surely be a success!
