Grimm Fairy Tales #105
Zenescope Entertainment
Writer: Pat Shand
Artist: Andrea Meloni
Reviewer: Derrick Crow
Summary: When the Water Nymphs claim Hailey, they accidentally drag Wulf and Skye into their war with the Sirens. Hailey's mother, Queen Calista, urges her to accept her heritage and move and leave Arcane Acre. A Siren attack cuts their reunion short though, giving the students time to be rescued by Sela... except for Wulf.
Review: And thus the “Rise of the Water Nymphs” turns into the heavy fall. All in all, this wasn't a bad 2-parter. It wasn't outstanding but Shand chose to focus on a single character and push her development forward and that is to be heavily admired in today's arc heavy comic world. I actually enjoyed these last few issues of GFT and if I can I hope to jump on board monthly.
This time around we get a more detailed look at Hailey's powers and what she's hiding, along with a bit more about the her past. Her mother, Queen Calista is never shown as an all-powerful being, but someone with compassion towards her people and who simply loves and wishes to protect her child even if it costs her life. I think Wulf is officially my favorite character after these two issues, he's so cocky but he does have the skills to back it up. Even if he has trouble taking on a hundred Sirens at once by himself.
It feels like the story for GFT has come a long way in 100+ issues. Sela has really grown into her character and we have a bunch of new, fresher faces to count among the main characters. This two-parter solidifies – despite dealing with tons of liquid based creatures – that Shand is going to make sure everyone gets their due, and everyone is just as important as another. And I'm a-okay with that.
The Sirens were nice horror themed monsters, and it was nice to see them have tactics and a brutality to them rather than just being hordes of Soldier-A's to barrel through in a single shot (although... that does happen at one point). I liked that they seemed to be on equal level with the Nymphs.
Not much else really happened in this 2-Parter. As it was mainly just to set up a few things with Hailey and give her a chance to shine, which is perfectly fine. Sela is a badass as usual and we get some set up with the forces of magic seemingly starting to mess up a bit. The dialogue was pretty good, with some excellent quips between Sela and Wulf. I like how Shand handles the characters, they all have personality and I haven't found someone I dislike yet.
Meloni's art takes a leap this issue. The action he delivers is very fluid (get it?) and great to look at. I loved reading his rendition of Hailey vs. the Siren. Probably the best call of a Siren I've seen in a good long while. All the characters looked even better this issue, and I really hope Meloni stays on as the artist for awhile. What he doesn't do a great job at this issue is showing emotion in faces that have glowing, single-colored eyes. There are a few shots with Hailey where she's supposed to come off as emotional and sad, but instead kind of just looks static and emotionless.
Still, I like his style a lot and I think him and Shand make a good team.
Final Score: 3 Aggressive Sirens out of 5
