Giant Robot Warrior Maintenance Crew #1 Cosmic Times/Paperlab Press Writer: Nathan Hill Pencils and Inks: Mervyn Mckoy Colors: Dawnson Chen Reviewer: Robert McClelland
Summary: There’s a long history of giant robot stories in popular culture, most of which involve massive battles, clean-cut heroes, and evil, over-the-top villains.
Well, that’s not quite what Giant Robot Warrior Maintenance Crew (GRWMC for short) is about.
Our story unfolds through the eyes of a young woman named Erica Pratch. She’s new to the Maintenance Crew, and joined up because she wanted to travel and be part of something exciting. But the reality of working inside a giant robot warrior isn’t anything like she expected. This is a high-stress job done in the most ridiculous situations possible, where people routinely snap under the pressure. On top of that the pilots of the robot don’t know what they’re doing, and alien monsters run loose in the service tunnels.
Review: If you ever were a fan of the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and all that came after it. (Such as myself at times when I got to see any of the later stuff.) You just might like this book. Not to say that this is loaded with cheesyness, because its really not. Nathan Hill's writing keeps you pretty interested and entertained through out this book due to all the situations the Maintenance Crew has to deal with and hardly getting any credit. I know I'd be wanting a Lawyer if I was going through any of the crap the crew has to deal with. You may recognize Hill from past writing for companies such as Terminus Media and Atlantis Studios for example. However for me, as far as I can remember this was my first experience with the man's writing. And I can honestly say I enjoyed it. Mervyn does a fantastic job through out the book with the art. The fact that the characters who are the so called heroes he draws in this look a bit like Power Rangers is pretty neat too. One of the things I find oddly amusing about some of the issues the Maintenance Crew have to deal with is parasites in the Mecha's crotch. As I tend to start thinking of an STD gone horribly wrong somehow. I think however for Erica, she'll be finding herself off and on that she had gotten the chance to be chosen for Pilot duty as time goes on. Not to mention how she seems a little annoyed on the great cover too!
I have to wonder though about the Pilot called Boomie, is he some kind of Alien or just a human who got the wrong end of a Science Experiment? And with how he acts, it makes me wonder how he's even one of the Pilots for the Mecha. Wonder how our main girl Erica would handle him in person? Maybe with a bit of ease compared to all the problems her and the rest of the Crew have to deal with inside the Mecha. I don't know if it was intended to be the general idea that Erica and the Crew she works with are essentially the human versions of Alpha 5. But I like it even if it wasn't the idea. This is also the kind of thing I wouldn't have minded seeing in a Power Rangers show. The big savior Mecha always in need of constant repairs at the worst of times. Would have made things a bit more challenging I feel. And despite what the People want, you think they would realize it would be a good time to retire HeroTron The Mecha. But then again, people have issues at times. Another character that I like is Jeb. He seems to be like the Zordon of this story. Only not stuck in a tube appearing as a giant head. You may or may not see it that way once you read this though. Over all I found this to be an enjoyable read, and if you have yet to read it yourself. Don't sit around waiting to do so! Hop to it! I know I look forward to seeing what other madness will happen to Erica and the crew! 5 out of 5 Stars.
