Summary: A group of activists from the animal rights group STAB (Stop Treating Animals Badly) breaks into the remote Malsum Island Research Facility, determined to document the horrific abuse of animals by pharmaceutical giant ReGen Corp. They discover too late that the horrors in ReGen's laboratory exceed anything they could have imagined in this first installment in the Apocalyptic comic book series from writer Shawn French and illustrator Mortimer Glum.
Review: With such a fantastic looking bunch of folks on the cover of this comic, you certainly know that none of them would have any issues getting themselves a date! Well, if the one they are dating happens to have some really eccentric interests that leave them pretty well open minded anyway. Normally, I'm not one to cover Horror centered titles all that often, as I usually leave that sort of thing to Ross or even David as those two seem to enjoy it a bit more then myself. Granted, I honestly had no idea what was in store for me when I started reading this. I know one thing though, the folks at ReGen likely have some very unpleasant reservations in Hell waiting for them when its finally their time to pass from the Mortal Coil. And the unfortunate residents and animals would likely be very willing to ensure that time comes very soon. I honestly wouldn't be able to blame them either. I'm pretty sure Jesus (or Yeshua as he seems to be called) would provide a very rousing Sermon too! And while we learned very little about the bunch (aside from past relationship issues) who were looking to bring all sorts of trouble to ReGen's doorstep, the unfortunate fates they experience is still liable to leave you feeling sorry for them. In fact they only really serve to help introduce Jesus and his bunch.
And its clear that Jesus himself is the one with the Rockstar good looks too! Lucky son of a gun! Heck he probably would pass off as a Rockstar easily enough. And with the power he seems to have, he'd easily rock a stage too! Matter of fact, what do you call a creature (other then It) who seems to be obsessed with eyeballs? I'm sure I could come up with something witty, but I'll leave that fun part to you folks that read this! I'm honestly curious of what the fate is for the last of the Anti-ReGen bunch. Since Shawn French oh so cruely left us hanging like a very unpleasant hang nail.
Its also easy to see that the art for this by Mortimer Glum was done digitally. Now nothing wrong with that at all, and in fact I rather like his art style on this. It fit everything perfectly. And I think this could transfer well over into an animated film if Shawn wanted to try that route with this comic. I'm sure that would be a collector's item to grab up for any Horror fan. And while we didn't get a whole lot of plot in this first issue aside from a possible teaser about the fate of one unfortunate soul. And if you are wondering if there is a plot for this instead of just a bunch of gorey scenery while you're reading it. The title's ending will nicely re-assure you that all is a well in that area. Although I'm sure this particularly cantankerous old man we see at the end has some fairly non good intentions for Jesus as well. Something I look forward to finding out if I'm right or wrong about. So if you're looking to get someone that great Horror related gift, grab this up for them!
