Summary: UTETH transforms one of his followers into the disgusting OOZE, unleashing him on the heroic EBON in part one of GENESIS, the epic that will introduce you to the Equiverse! In the corrupt city of Babylon, HELLRAZER searches the streets for a mysterious creature preying on small children in the standalone tale LIVING IN SHADOWS!
The battle between Good and Evil is joined. Valiant heroes and ruthless villains, chosen as the champions of Hylla and Uteth, godlike manifestations of good and evil, do battle in every issue of the Equinox anthology!
Review: Equinox has been something that's been either stored in various places or recently moved to my nice white shelf and largely gone un-read due to various factors. But earlier tonight I finally pulled this sucker out of where it was, took it out of the bag and board, and started to read a way. And the thing I'm liking is that the guys at Equinox Comics aren't going in Origin story first with this first issue in both the first and second stories. Clark's art and colors is something that certainly stands out in this book. Something that continues into the second story with Hellrazer, even though Johnson is the one who handles the art duties in that one. Another thing I want to mention is that I'm loving Sean Eddingfield's cover for this book. Which is essentially one large image from both front and back. And shows off Uteth's look that likely gets him the ladies!
Clark's handling of letters is also something that stands out to me as well. Ebon is likely a character I could possibly really come to like. While he might seem like your standard Superman type character, the fact he seems to like a good rumble is a nice touch. And the world of comics can always use more minority type characters. I like that Aaron Ballinger and Timothy Lackey were willing to go against the grain and have what is likely one of their main stay characters be something other then of the white folk persuasion.
I got to wonder though if Ooze is going to regret wanting power and the way it changed him. But something like that isn't likely to happen til years later in his life. Heck this guy is probably a freaking idol to the pink slime from Ghostbusters 2! When Ooze goes from human to well.. His namesake, Clark does a rather nice job of making the lettering for him stand out differently in his speech bubbles. And boy is Uteth one devious critter!
I am pretty curious to see how his sister and her buddy Ky are going to react to his less then sneaky meddling. I imagine a good slap to Uteth's face by his sister would do nicely! Or just serve to make him pretty angry, which likely wouldn't be good for anyone! I look forward to finding out how Ebon manages to come out on top (if he is able too anyway) against Ooze and the friends he makes at the end of the first part of this story.
One thing I liked about the Hellrazer story that comes after Ebon's, is the rather sarcastic Captain that shows up a few times. I'm also wondering if she's got some kind of supernaturalness to her or if she's just a darn good cop with great instincts. Now my main problem with her and Hellrazer is the rather somewhat easy going relationship the two seem to have almost nearly right off the bat. I would think there would be a lot more friction for a time between the two. Especially considering how the Captain and her men walk in on Hellrazer who was considering whether or not to turn someone she saved into a happy meal.
But hey, at least she's not seemingly denying her more Vampiric tendencies even though she does actually care and is willing to track down the bad guy. Who might be the Boogeyman himself! And while there's several other glaring inconsistencies that occur in this story, I otherwise enjoyed what I read. I would definitely be down to read more. Wonder if Hellrazer will show up to help Ebon out? Something I'll have to find out! I think this introduction of the Equiverse does a good job in doing its intended mission! And if you haven't read this just yet, don't deny yourself a chance to look at something straight from Oklahoma! Plus, our lady heroine has some lovely blades attached to her forearms! Can never go wrong with that level of cool!
