Critter #1
Big Dog Ink/Aspen
Writer: Tom Hutchison
Pencils and Colors: Fico Ossio
Lettering: Kel Nuttall
Reviewer: Rob Wrecks
Summary: As a young girl, Cassia grew up as a tomboy who learned karate, ran track and took gymnastics. One day when a little girl is kidnapped for ransom, she finds out that she might have what it takes to be a superhero. But, little does she know that being a hero was always in her blood!
Review: Now I've seen a few things about Critter here and there over the past few years but never really had an opportunity to check any of it out until now. And while this is pretty much at the beginning of the series thanks in part to Aspen acquiring BDI as an imprint, its also serving quite nicely as my way of getting introduced to the world of Critter. For those of you who want more ladies in comics as leads, this will be perfect for you as well. Plus Cassia (our fair Critter) is a Redhead to boot! Considering I'm a lover of Redheads, I am liking this a lot and our fair heroine certainly has some spunk to her as well. The fact one of the things she was evidently quite willing to do in her home town as a super hero was to protect the dignity of cows in the area was a nice touch to me. As its not often something you would see a hero do. The letter to her grandmother is also a nice touch too as well, and makes me curious on why exactly the woman isn't a big fan of Cassia and her mother's chosen lifestyle. Course the dangers of it are one aspect to consider in all this.
Or the grandma could be one of those types who have an old world mentality of what a girl should and shouldn't be doing. Either way, I look forward to seeing her show up at some point in the future.
Even though he's a bad guy, I really like the look of Yellowjacket, along with his attitude. He's someone I wouldn't mind seeing more of and hopefully that will happen. Especially after the way Critter handles him in this. Would certainly be a big factor in being pretty darn motivated to come after her for revenge!
I don't know if Tom planned it or its just how Fico saw it, but the color blue is strongly present through out this book. Which isn't a bad thing as blue is a pretty awesome color. I know though I'm looking forward to seeing more of Fico's art and colors for Critter.
Tom also certainly gave us readers a nice tease with a look into Cassia's future thanks to Paradox, a fella who bears one heck of a burden thanks to his powers of time. Though it seems he may not be entirely a good guy thanks to the new back up story Tom and the gang included in this newer version of issue 1. I don't know what he intends to do, but I'm certainly eager to find out! Perhaps his being in the past will cause him to change his views on things, or could fuel his motivations. Wonder what all he knows about the personal future of a certain panty stealer? I'm sure Cassia would be very appreciative of that information!
I look forward to seeing where things go in this world, especially with the two supporting casts we see in this book. One being in Cassia's normal everyday self, and the other in her hero side of life. So put me down for issue 2 for my mind is ready for the wild ride this very well could be!
