Copperhead #5
Image Comics
Writer: Jay Faerber
Artist: Scott Godlewski
Colorist: Ron Riley
Letterer: Thomas Mauer
Reviewer: Rob Wrecks
Summary: There are no easy answers for Sheriff Clara Bronson in the conclusion of our first story arc!
Reviewer: Man oh man has this series continued to impress me. Makes me really glad I did give this a chance when it came out several months ago. Faerber has done a damn fine job in the writing on this. And while some may have found the conclusion to this story arc possibly lacking, I know I didn't feel that way. As either way, it was a win for the Sheriff no matter how small a win it may have been. Although one thing that did bug me was seeing Boo up and around in this issue. As cause after what happened to him in #4, I kinda figured he'd still be laid out to a degree. Course considering he's an alien and a rather big ol' fella at that, he's likely a very sturdy guy and can handle it more then what a human could. I know I've already said this earlier, but Faerber really did a good job in the writing, especially in the twists and turns that were seen through out this book.
Ishmael himself, despite being an 'Artie' feels like so much more then that. Especially with the way he tends to act. I'm awfully curious to see if whether or not he'll be showing up in future issues. Especially where things are concerned with the Natives, as I can only imagine how unhappy they are with him now. And boy those fellas are some ugly suckers. You definitely also got to feel sorry for Floyd, that boy's gambling has really messed him over. Scott Godlewski captured the expression on Floyd's face perfectly after his mom gave him the what for. Who knows, maybe this will be the kick he needs to drop his little bad habit? If it doesn't get him killed first at least.
I am definitely looking forward to seeing what Faerber and the rest of the creative team do with this series. Trouble for the Sheriff seems like a very certain possibility in two separate ways and that's likely gonna be one heck of a show down with either of those situations. Momma Sewell as a babysitter though, that's something I definitely want to see! Let's just hope it doesn't give the Sheriff's son a need for therapy later in his life! If you're still on the fence about Copperhead, I truly recommend giving it a shot. Either with the 5 issues out currently or when the trade comes out. As you are only doing yourself a dis-service in not reading this awesome title.
