Copperhead #1
Image Comics
Writer: Jay Faerber
Artist: Scott Godlewski
Colorist: Ron Riley
Letterer: Thomas Mauer
Reviewer: Rob Wrecks
Summary: Welcome to Copperhead, a grimy mining town on the edge of a backwater planet. Single mom Clara Bronson is the new sheriff, and on her first day she'll have to contend with a resentful deputy, a shady mining tycoon, and a family of alien hillbillies. And did we mention the massacre?
Review: Now its been something of a long while since I've had the awesome opportunity to read a title from Image. And when I had the chance to go to my favorite store known as Hastings and actually be able to buy a few comics, I was lucky enough to see this first issue and the first issue of fellow Image title Wytches and decided to make the right choice in getting them. I've yet to read Wytches, but rest assured I will be rectifying that very soon! I honestly think Ron Riley's colors in this book really helps the art by Scott Godlewski show the rustic old West look the planet this story is set on has really well. Especially since this is a 'Space Western' styled story. Something I don't really read a lot of or watch much of myself. Jay and Scott I feel really and truly did an absolutely great job in bringing this title together. Matter of fact if I didn't think it was only just a brand new comic that came around. I would have assumed it had already been around awhile now with some of the history that's been mentioned.
Big kudos to Jay and Scott for pulling that off. I like that things between Clara and Budroxifinicus (just feels awkward to call him Boo considering he could very likely kick the crap out of me with no effort) aren't having an instant hit off between the two of them. The friction between the two is something I imagine will continue to happen for a good long while unless otherwise when its something serious. Whether or not there will be some good amounts of bonding between the two remains to be seen. But is also something to look forward to possibly seeing. I gotta say though, I feel a bit for Zeke! Getting reminders from mom that's not really needed! But moms are like that and not much you can do about it except love them and never put them in a nursing home. Unless you want to get punched in the throat for doing so.
My initial impression of Benjamin Hickory is that at first I wanted to think of him as being like Pappy O'Daniel from 'O Brother Where Art Thou', but then thought that might be a bit of an insult to Pappy as that man was upfront about what he wanted from you. With Hickory, he just doesn't seem trustworthy to me. Whether or not I'll be wrong about that in the coming issues is something to look forward too. And if Mamma Sewell's still in lock up, she's definitely not going to be happy once she's learned of what's happened to her family. One can definitely also see why its no safe to be out after dark! Especially with some weirdo out there with a spiffy gun and snazzy outfit! I am definitely looking forward to more of this story, and you should definitely check this out if you have yet to do so. Trust me, your money will be well spent on this rather then on the 85th tie in of the 25th event currently going on at Marvel.
