Review: I think Dan Parent is THE most progressive man comics today. First he’s been scripting Kevin Keller for Archie and he’s been at the forefront of some of today’s greatest stories dealing with minorities. His stories really remind me of 80's where television shows had these great stories that had a little moral in them and acceptance for those that are different than ourselves. Mainly with this issue I’m thinking of Blaire’s cousin with Cerebral Palsy who did stand-up comedy. These are heartwarming examples of how we should behave towards one another. In an age where dark and violent, not to mention overly brooding characters are the norm, these stories set an example not just for the young but everyone!
The issue we meet Harper who happens to be Veronica’s cousin, a Latina and in a wheelchair. Wow talk about multiple whammies all rolled into one, but being Veronica’s cousin means she has this fabulous sense of style and is bright, confident, and full of life. As Archie is introduced, you very quickly learn that her disability while a part of her doesn’t define her. So now that introductions are done it’s off to the dance for the trio.
This is Riverdale after all and all the kids are accepting that we see anyway, and welcome Harper with gusto. Of course there are your usual antics and mishaps that come with an Archie comic. Of all the people that Harper should run into in her chair, full speed down a hill mind you, is Reggie who reacts totally differently than I would have thought. With his help she even stands and it’s kind of like love at first sight and who would’ve thought it. Of course Veronica is not having it that Reggie and her cousin would have feelings for each other, because it is Reggie after all.
I liked this very much I mean they are related and you can tell just through what they say and how they act. Also this side of Reggie is delightful to see! We all have parts of ourselves that come out I the least expected moment and for Reggie this was it. Of course Veronica is never happy unless she is interfering in someone’s life and this is no exception. But things work out the way they should as they always do in Archie’s world.
This is heartwarming, fun and teaches a valuable lesson, never judge a book by its cover and we have Dan to thank for showing another shining example of why and how the world can be a better place. Plus it’s classic Archie artwork and it’s fantastic! From start to finish it emphasizes why Dan’s a leading force in the industry.
